Public Officials

Local government and public officials are responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of their communities. They are responsible for communicating public information and raising awareness of public health and safety concerns. They are important partners in communicating pipeline safety information.

Many local governments deliver a variety of services that may interface with pipeline operations and can impact pipeline safety, including water, sewer, and storm water systems, road building and maintenance, permitting, planning, zoning, and police/fire protection. They govern how work is performed in a public right-of-way. A government’s ordinances, policies, and practices can greatly impact pipeline safety in a community.

Learn more about what local public officials can do to impact pipeline safety by examining the information on this website, understanding which pipeline operators and products are in your community, and promoting 811 and the use of the One-Call system.
